English: First, I have something to thank you for.
English: This channel has passed 300 subscribers.
English: Thank you so much.
English: Even now, it feels a little strange to think that people in many places around the world, not only in Japan, are listening to a podcast I make alone at home in Hokkaido.

A different autumn in the same September
A different autumn in the same September
さて。
English: Now then.
English: Today, I would like to talk about autumn in Hokkaido.
English: It is already September.
English: In Japan, September is technically considered autumn, but it feels quite different depending on where you live.
English: For example, this afternoon, September 8.
English: It is around 28 degrees in Tokyo and around 29 degrees in Osaka.
English: It is still pretty hot, is it not?
English: Even if someone says, “It is autumn,” some people might think, “No, is it not still summer?”
English: But around Asahikawa in Hokkaido, where I live, it is about 23 degrees today.
English: It gets even cooler in the morning and at night.
English: It is the same Japan and the same September, but the difference is quite large.
English: Japan stretches a long way from north to south, so the seasons progress quite differently from place to place.
Hokkaido’s heat and autumn air
Hokkaido’s heat and autumn air
English: Hokkaido also has many days with less humidity than Honshu.
English: Of course, Hokkaido has hot and humid days too.
English: But I feel that the heat is a little different from summer in Tokyo or Osaka.
English: Large cities such as Tokyo and Osaka have many buildings and a lot of asphalt.
English: They hold heat during the day and do not cool down easily at night.
English: The humidity can also make it feel hotter than the temperature suggests.
English: Hokkaido is hot in summer too.
English: These days, temperatures above 30 degrees are common as well.
English: But when I step into the shade or a breeze blows, I often think, “Oh, it feels a little cooler.”
English: Then, when September comes, the morning air suddenly changes.
English: There are days when I think, “Ah, summer is over.”
Autumn appetite in Hokkaido
Autumn appetite in Hokkaido
English: Japan has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
English: I think people in Japan quite enjoy talking about the seasons.
English: Autumn in particular has many expressions such as “autumn for appetite,” “autumn for reading,” “autumn for sports,” and “autumn for the arts.”
English: We attach almost anything to autumn.
English: Food is delicious in autumn too.
English: Chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and mushrooms, for example.
English: In Hokkaido, it is also a delicious season for foods such as potatoes and pumpkins.
English: And there is newly harvested rice.
English: Autumn for appetite may be my favorite.
Autumn leaves descending from the mountains
Autumn leaves descending from the mountains
English: And when we think of autumn, there are, of course, the changing leaves.
English: The leaves change from green to yellow and red.
English: Autumn arrives early in Hokkaido compared with other parts of Japan, so the leaves begin changing early too.
English: Around the Daisetsuzan mountains, including Mount Asahidake, the leaves begin changing especially early by Japanese standards.
English: The colors change little by little from the mountaintops, and it feels as if autumn gradually descends toward the towns.
English: At this time of year, the scenery looks completely different from summer.
Hokkaido’s short autumn
Hokkaido’s short autumn
English: But autumn in Hokkaido is quite short.
English: In Hokkaido, some people joke that Hokkaido has only summer and winter.
English: Of course, it does not literally have only two seasons, but spring and autumn feel very short.
English: We say, “It has become a little cooler lately,” then suddenly it becomes, “Wait, it is already cold,” and soon after that, “Maybe it will snow soon.”
English: In Hokkaido, people begin talking about the first snow in October.
English: Snow can fall even earlier in the mountains.
English: So September in Hokkaido is a time when summer has ended and the season is moving steadily toward winter.
English: I quite like the air at this time of year.
English: I notice the slightly cold air when I go outside in the morning, the earlier evenings, and the way the sky seems higher.
English: Those things make me think, “Ah, it is autumn.”
Traveling in Hokkaido in autumn
Traveling in Hokkaido in autumn
English: If you visit Hokkaido in autumn, please pay a little attention to your clothing.
English: Even when it is warm during the day, mornings and nights can become quite cold.
English: A light jacket, cardigan, or another layer you can put on will help you feel prepared.
English: Hokkaido is truly vast, so do not look only at “Hokkaido weather.” Check the weather for the place you will actually visit, whether that is Sapporo, Asahikawa, Hakodate, or Shiretoko.
English: Even within Hokkaido, the temperature and weather can be completely different.
English: In autumn, places such as Mount Asahidake, Biei, and Sounkyo are also very beautiful.
English: Summer in Hokkaido is lovely, but autumn has a different atmosphere, with cooler air and changing colors in the scenery.
What season is it where you are?
What season is it where you are?
English: What season is it where you live now?
English: Is it still hot?
English: Or has it already started to become cooler?
English: If you traveled to Japan, which season would you like to visit in: spring, summer, autumn, or winter?

Cultural Notes
September does not feel the same everywhere in Japan. Japan extends a long way from north to south, so the calendar may say autumn while some places still feel like summer. Haru presents the temperatures in this episode as a snapshot of one afternoon, not a permanent comparison.
‘Only summer and winter’ is a local joke, not a literal claim. Some people use this exaggeration to describe how brief spring and autumn can feel in Hokkaido. The timing of cooler weather, autumn colors, and snow changes by location, elevation, and year.
One Hokkaido forecast is not enough for every trip. Hokkaido is very large, and conditions can differ between Sapporo, Asahikawa, Hakodate, Shiretoko, and mountain areas. Travelers should check the forecast for their actual destination and carry a light extra layer in autumn.
Haru’s Note
A season does not arrive everywhere on the same day. I like noticing autumn through small changes—the cool morning air, an earlier sunset, or a different color in the mountains. They remind me to look at the place where I actually am, rather than only at the date on the calendar.
