「三方さんぽうよし」Can Everyone Win?

Misaki ノゾミは、何なにか新あたらしいことを始はじめる時とき、「自分じぶんにとっていいか」だけを考かんがえる？

English: Nozomi, when you start something new, do you only think about whether it is good for you?

Nozomi まずは、自分じぶんが楽たのしいかを考かんがえるかな。始はじめる前まえから苦くるしかったら、続つづかないし。

English: First, I think about whether I will enjoy it. If it feels hard before I even begin, I probably will not continue.

Misaki それは大事だいじだね。じゃあ、そこにあと二ふたつ足たしたら、全部ぜんぶでいくつ？

English: That is important. Then, if you add two more, how many do you have in total?

Nozomi 三みっつ。今日きょうは算数さんすうの番組ばんぐみだった？

English: Three. Did this become a math podcast today?

Misaki 違ちがいます。今日きょうの言葉ことばは「三方さんぽうよし」。これ、私わたしが一番いちばん好すきな言葉ことばなんだ〜。

Breaking down sanpou yoshi

Misaki まずは「三方さんぽうよし」を、言葉ことばの形かたちから見みてみよう。

English: First, let’s look at the form of the phrase sanpou yoshi.

Nozomi 「三さん」は三みっつ。「方ぽう」は、方向ほうこうの「方ほう」だよね。

English: San means three. Hou is the same character used in the word for direction.

Misaki そう。ここでの「方ほう」は、方向ほうこうより「立場たちば」や「側がわ」に近ちかいです。

English: Right. Here, hou is closer to a position or a side than a direction.

Nozomi 「方ほう」なのに、「三方さんぽう」では「ぽう」と読よむんだね。

English: Even though the character is read hou, in sanpou it becomes pou.

Misaki 前まえの「ん」とつながって音おとが変かわります。「さんほう」ではなく「さんぽう」と覚おぼえてね。

English: The sound changes after the n. Remember, it is sanpou, not sanhou.

Nozomi 三人さんにんという意味いみじゃなくて、三みっつの立場たちばなんだ。

English: So it does not mean three people. It means three different sides.

Misaki そして「よし」は、「よい」や「いい」という意味いみ。少すこし古ふるい形かたちだけど、今いまでもちゃんと「準備じゅんびよし！」のように使つかいます。

English: And yoshi means good. It is an older form, but we still use it in expressions like, “Ready—good!”

Nozomi 出発前しゅっぱつまえに「財布さいふよし、スマホよし、お菓子かしよし！」って確認かくにんする感かんじ？

English: Like checking before leaving: “Wallet, good. Phone, good. Snacks, good!”

Misaki 最後さいごだけ、ずいぶん大事だいじそうだね。

English: The last one sounds especially important to you.

Nozomi つまり「三方さんぽうよし」は、三みっつの立場たちばにとって、どれもよいということ。

English: So sanpou yoshi means that something is good for all three sides.

Misaki その通とおり。次つぎは、その三みっつが誰だれなのかを見みてみよう。

Seller, buyer, and society

Misaki 三みっつの立場たちばは、「売うり手てよし、買かい手てよし、世間せけんよし」です。

English: The three sides are: good for the seller, good for the buyer, and good for society.

Nozomi 売うる人ひとと買かう人ひとは分わかるけど、「世間せけん」は急きゅうに広ひろいね。

English: I understand the seller and buyer, but society suddenly sounds very broad.

Misaki 「世間せけん」は、二人ふたりの周まわりにいる人ひとや地域ちいき、社会しゃかいのこと。商売しょうばいは、自分じぶんたちだけの中なかで終おわらないからね。

English: Seken means the people, community, and society around the two sides. Business does not end with only the seller and buyer.

Nozomi お店みせだけがもうかって、買かった人ひとが困こまるなら「買かい手てよし」じゃない。

English: If only the shop profits and the buyer has a problem, it is not good for the buyer.

Misaki 買かう人ひとだけが安やすく得とくをして、お店みせが続つづけられないなら「売うり手てよし」でもありません。

English: If only the buyer gets a very low price and the shop cannot continue, it is not good for the seller either.

Nozomi 誰だれか一人ひとりが我慢がまんして作つくる「よし」じゃないんだね。

English: So it is not a kind of good built on one person’s sacrifice.

Misaki そう。三方さんぽうよしは、ただ親切しんせつにすることでも、自分じぶんの利益りえきを捨すてることでもないんだ。

English: Right. Sanpou yoshi is not simply being kind, and it does not mean giving up your own benefit.

Nozomi 商品しょうひんが便利べんりでも、作つくる途中とちゅうで地域ちいきを困こまらせたら「世間せけんよし」とは言いいにくいね。

English: Even if a product is useful, it is hard to call it good for society if making it harms the local community.

Nozomi 三人さんにんとも、無理むりに笑顔えがおを作つくらなくていい。本当ほんとうに続つづく形かたちを探さがすんだ。

English: No one has to force a smile. The goal is to find a form that can truly continue.

The Omi merchants and a later phrase

Misaki この考かんがえ方かたは、今いまの滋賀県しがけんを中心ちゅうしんに活動かつどうした「近江商人おうみしょうにん」の商あきないと結むすび付ついています。

English: This idea is connected to the commerce of Omi merchants, who were based around present-day Shiga Prefecture.

Nozomi 自分じぶんの町まちだけじゃなくて、遠とおい地域ちいきへ行いって商売しょうばいをした人ひとたちだよね。

English: They were merchants who traveled and did business in distant regions, not only in their hometowns.

Misaki うん。知しらない土地とちで商売しょうばいを続つづけるには、商品しょうひんだけではなく信用しんようも必要ひつようでした。

English: Yes. To continue doing business in unfamiliar places, they needed not only products but also trust.

Nozomi 一度いちどだけ売うって終おわりなら、ごまかせるかもしれない。でも、また来きたいなら信頼しんらいを失うしなえない。

English: If they sold something only once, they might get away with cheating. But if they wanted to return, they could not lose people’s trust.

Misaki そして大事だいじな点てんがあります。「三方さんぽうよし」という短みじかい決きまり文句もんくは、昔むかしの商人しょうにんがそのまま使つかっていた言葉ことばではありません。

English: There is one important point. The short fixed phrase sanpou yoshi was not used in exactly this form by merchants long ago.

Nozomi じゃあ、あとから作つくられたの？

English: Then was it created later?

Misaki そう。近江商人おうみしょうにんの考かんがえ方かたを、後あとの時代じだいに分わかりやすくまとめた標語ひょうごだとされています。

English: Yes. It is considered a later slogan that neatly summarizes the philosophy of the Omi merchants.

Nozomi 長ながい知恵ちえを、覚おぼえやすい四文字よんもじにしたんだね。

English: So a long history of wisdom was packed into four easy-to-remember characters.

One loaf connects to the town

Misaki では、地元じもとのパン屋やさんで、パンを一ひとつ買かう場面ばめんを考かんがえてみよう。

English: Now, imagine buying one loaf of bread from a local bakery.

Nozomi パンなら得意とくい。買かう準備じゅんびはできています。

English: Bread is my specialty. I am ready to buy.

Misaki お店みせは商品しょうひんが売うれて、仕事しごとを続つづけられる。これが「売うり手てよし」。

English: The bakery sells its product and can continue its work. That is good for the seller.

Nozomi 私わたしは、おいしいパンを食たべられる。これが「買かい手てよし」。

English: I get to eat delicious bread. That is good for the buyer.

Misaki 地域ちいきのお店みせが続つづけば、人ひとが働はたらく場所ばしょや、町まちのつながりも残のこります。これが「世間せけんよし」につながることがあります。

English: If local shops continue, jobs and community connections can remain. That can lead to good for society.

Nozomi パン一ひとつから、作つくる人ひとや働はたらく人ひと、町まちまで線せんが長ながく伸のびた。

English: One loaf of bread suddenly connects to the maker, the workers, and the whole town.

Misaki ただし、地元じもとで買かえば、何なんでも自動的じどうてきに三方さんぽうよしになるわけではありません。

English: However, buying locally does not automatically make everything sanpou yoshi.

Nozomi 作つくる人ひとが無理むりをしていないか。買かう人ひとが納得なっとくできるか。周まわりにもよいか。全部ぜんぶを見みるんだね。

English: We look at whether the maker is overworked, whether the buyer is satisfied, and whether it is good for others too.

Misaki そう考かんがえると、パンを選えらぶ目めも少すこし変かわりそう。

English: Thinking that way may even change how you choose your bread.

Sanpou yoshi beyond business

Misaki 三方さんぽうよしは商あきないから生うまれた言葉ことばだけど、広ひろい考かんがえ方かたとして、日常にちじょうにも落おとし込こめます。

English: Sanpou yoshi comes from commerce, but as a broader way of thinking, we can apply it to daily life too.

Nozomi 買かい物ものをしない日ひにも使つかえる？

English: Can we use it even on days when we do not shop?

Misaki もちろん。友達ともだちと予定よていを決きめる時ときなら、自分じぶんも楽たのしい、相手あいても無理むりをしない、周まわりにも迷惑めいわくをかけない形かたちを探さがせるよね。

English: Of course. When making plans with a friend, you can find a plan you enjoy, that does not burden your friend, and that does not trouble others.

Nozomi 私わたしだけ行いきたい場所ばしょを十個じゅっこ送おくるのは、一方いっぽうよしかもしれない。

English: Sending ten places that only I want to visit might be ippou yoshi—good for only one side.

Misaki 新あたらしい物ものを選えらぶ時ときも、自分じぶんに便利べんりか、作つくる人ひとに無理むりがないか、環境かんきょうにどんな影響えいきょうがあるかを考かんがえられます。

English: When choosing a new product, we can ask whether it is useful to us, fair to the maker, and how it affects the environment.

Nozomi 三みっつの立場たちばは、場面ばめんによって「自分じぶん・相手あいて・周まわり」と考かんがえてもいいんだ。

English: Depending on the situation, we can think of the three sides as ourselves, the other person, and those around us.

Misaki その「周まわり」には、地域ちいきや環境かんきょう、未来みらいの人ひとまで入はいることがあります。

English: Those around us can include the community, the environment, and even people in the future.

Misaki これは元もとの意味いみを広ひろげた使つかい方かたです。大切たいせつなのは、自分じぶんだけを見みないこと。

English: This is a broader application of the original meaning. The important thing is not to look only at yourself.

Nozomi 三方向さんほうこうを見みるなら、首くびも柔やわらかくしておかないとね。

English: If we are looking in three directions, we should keep our necks flexible too.

Misaki そういう形かたちを目指めざして、毎回まいかい作つくっています。

Three questions for your choices

Misaki 私わたしは、何なにかを始はじめる時ときや選えらぶ時ときに、この考かんがえ方かたを一番いちばん大切たいせつにしています。

English: When I begin or choose something, this is the idea I value most.

Nozomi 三みっつ全部ぜんぶが、完璧かんぺきになる答こたえを探さがすの？

English: Do you look for an answer that makes all three sides perfect?

Misaki 完璧かんぺきじゃなくて大丈夫だいじょうぶ。自分じぶんだけが得とくをしていないか、誰だれかが無理むりをしていないか、長ながく続つづけられる形かたちか。この三みっつを考かんがえるための「ものさし」です。

English: It does not need to be perfect. It is a ruler for asking three things: Am I the only one benefiting? Is anyone being pushed too hard? Can this continue for a long time?

Nozomi 正解せいかいを出だす道具どうぐじゃなくて、立たち止どまるための道具どうぐなんだね。

English: So it is not a tool that gives one correct answer. It is a tool that helps us pause and think.

Misaki では、今日きょうの三みっつをまとめます。一ひとつ目め、「三方さんぽうよし」は売うり手て、買かい手て、世間せけんによい商あきないを目指めざす考かんがえ方かた。
