Ichigo Ichie: Can the Same Meeting Happen Twice?

Nozomi knows ichigo ichie as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, but Misaki says it can also describe time with family and friends she will see again tomorrow. They begin with this small contradiction and trace the phrase from the tea ceremony into everyday life.

What You’ll Learn

You will learn how 一期一会 divides into 一期, meaning a lifetime, and 一会, meaning one meeting or gathering. You will also discover its connection to Yamanoue Soji, Ii Naosuke, and the tea ceremony, then practice natural ways to use the phrase for travel encounters, familiar relationships, and unrepeatable moments.

Ichigo ichie, even though we will meet tomorrow?

English: Nozomi, have you heard the phrase ichigo ichie?

English: Of course! It means a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, right?

English: Yes, that is the general idea. I used to think that was the whole meaning too…

English: What? If you used to think that, do you think differently now?

Misaki

English: Yes. There is actually a little more to it.

English: Is it not about meeting someone while traveling, or someone you may never see again?

English: Of course, it can describe those encounters too. But it can also describe time with family and friends you will see again tomorrow.

English: What? It is still ichigo ichie even if we will meet again tomorrow?

Misaki

English: Exactly. It sounds strange, does it not?

English: And with that, welcome to Late Night Japanese Chat.

Misaki

English: We are Misaki and…

Nozomi

English: Nozomi, bringing you tonight's episode.

English: Tonight, let us take our time exploring what ichigo ichie means and why it can also describe time with someone we will see again tomorrow.

Breaking down ichigo and ichie

Breaking down ichigo and ichie

English: First, let us split ichigo ichie into two parts: ichigo and ichie.

English: Does ichigo mean a period, like season one and season two?

English: It is natural to read it that way. Here, ichigo is a Buddhist term meaning a person's whole life, from birth to death.

English: So ichigo means a lifetime. Then does ichie mean one gathering?

English: Yes. It means one encounter or gathering. Together, the words mean a meeting that happens once in a lifetime.

English: But… we can use it for someone we meet every week too, right? Now I am a little confused again.

English: That is the important part of this phrase. Before counting meetings, let us look at the tea setting where ichigo ichie developed.

The same tea gathering cannot happen twice

The same tea gathering cannot happen twice

English: Ichigo ichie originally expresses an important principle of the Japanese tea ceremony.

English: Kokoroe means an attitude or mental preparation that is important in a certain setting, right?

English: Right. Yamanoue Soji, a disciple of Sen no Rikyu, recorded the idea of “a meeting that happens once in a lifetime” in the Yamanoue Soji Ki.

English: Does that mean today's tea can only be enjoyed today?

English: Yes. Even if the same host and guests gather in the same room, the season, weather, and feelings will be different. The exact same tea gathering cannot be recreated.

English: That is why the person serving tea welcomes the guests with care, and the guests value that one occasion too.

English: Later, near the end of the Edo period, Ii Naosuke used the expression ichigo ichie in Chanoyu Ichie Shu and is said to have emphasized this spirit.

English: So the idea expanded from a bowl of tea to the whole experience of spending time with another person.

We can meet again, but we cannot return to today

We can meet again, but we cannot return to today

English: Let us return to our first question. Can ichigo ichie describe time with someone we will see again tomorrow?

English: After hearing about the tea gathering… I feel that it can.

English: Exactly. Think of dinner with your family every day. You may eat together again tomorrow, but today's conversation only belongs to today.

English: Yesterday we laughed, today we may be a little tired, and tomorrow there may be good news to share.

English: Right. Even with the same person, both of you are changing little by little. There may be a next time, but there is no way to repeat today.

English: When I think of it that way, even the usual dinner table looks a little different.

English: But you do not have to turn every meeting into a special event. Putting down your phone and listening to one thing the other person says can be enough to value the present moment.

What a stranger left behind

What a stranger left behind

English: On the other hand, there are also ichigo ichie encounters with people we truly meet only once.

English: Ah… I just remembered someone who gave me directions at a station while I was traveling.

Misaki

English: What were they like?

English: I was struggling with a map when they asked where I was going. They walked part of the way with me… and I never even asked their name.

English: It was only a few minutes, yet you still remember it.

English: Yes. I may remember their voice more clearly than the scenery. I probably will not meet them again, but they made that day of my trip feel a little warmer.

English: Ichigo ichie is not limited to encounters that dramatically change our lives.

English: Right. Even a brief encounter can leave something within us.

Does valuing every encounter feel too serious?

Does valuing every encounter feel too serious?

English: But when you hear, “Treat every encounter as once in a lifetime,” does it not sound a little tiring?

English: I know! If I felt that every conversation had to be perfect, I would stop meeting anyone.

English: I do not think ichigo ichie means that we must never make mistakes. It can simply mean not treating the other person carelessly and listening properly to what is being said.

English: I see. So even without saying anything profound, we can look at someone and say thank you?

English: Yes. And you do not have to force yourself to meet people you do not want to see. The phrase does not mean that you must accept every connection.

English: Ah, that is a relief. What matters is not the number of encounters, but the time in front of us.

English: Exactly. Rather than making the moment perfect, it is about being here now. That feels possible in daily life too.

How do we use ichigo ichie?

How do we use ichigo ichie?

English: Finally, let us see how ichigo ichie is used in everyday life.

English: If you meet someone while traveling, you can say, “I value once-in-a-lifetime encounters during my travels.”

English: Yes. To someone you have just met, you can also say, “Our meeting here today is ichigo ichie too.”

English: But if I said, “This shopping trip is ichigo ichie too,” every time I went to a convenience store… would that be a little dramatic?

English: The clerk would be surprised too. Rather than repeating it in ordinary conversation, it sounds natural when an encounter or moment feels special.

English: In English, “a once-in-a-lifetime encounter” is close, but it takes more explanation to include the feeling that today's moment with someone you will meet again is also unrepeatable.

English: That is why it is easier to understand if we imagine a tea gathering instead of translating only the words. Both host and guest put their hearts into today's one meeting.

Today's one meeting

Today's one meeting

English: Let us briefly review today's conversation.

English: Ichigo means a lifetime, and ichie means one encounter or gathering.

English: In the tea ceremony, today's gathering is considered impossible to recreate, even if the same people meet again.

English: That is why ichigo ichie is not only for people we will never see again. Today with the people we know is also unrepeatable.

English: When we think we will see someone again tomorrow, there are things we stop saying. But today might be a good day to say one thank you, don't you think?

English: Yes. The moment does not have to be perfect. Listening to the person in front of us a little more carefully can itself be ichigo ichie.

English: Is there a brief encounter that you still remember today?

English: If you would like, tell us about your small memory with that person in the comments.

Cultural Notes

一期 originally refers to a person's whole lifetime. 一期 is a Buddhist term for the span from birth to death. 一会 means one meeting or gathering. Together, the expression asks people to approach a meeting as though it could happen only once in a lifetime.

The familiar four-character expression grew from tea practice. Yamanoue Soji's Yamanoue Soji Ki records the idea of 一期に一度の会. Near the end of the Edo period, Ii Naosuke used 一期一会 in Chanoyu Ichie Shu and emphasized sincere attention from both host and guest.

Meeting the same person again does not recreate the same meeting. In tea practice, the guests, room, season, weather, utensils, and feelings of the participants form one unrepeatable gathering. This is why ichigo ichie can also describe time with people we see regularly.

Haru’s Note

I first thought ichigo ichie was only about people we meet once and never see again. But its connection to the tea ceremony reveals a more familiar idea: even when we meet the same person again, today's conversation will not return. I like that the phrase does not demand a perfect moment. It simply asks us not to treat the present carelessly.
